Proof positive: imitation is the best form of flattery. eCellar is the wine industry's tomorrow software, today. And eWinery wants to offer what we have.
Last month (in March 2013), Ron Scharman of eWinery Solutions, posted a long announcement on their website announcing 'The Next Generation of Wine Software Starts Now.'
Um, Ron & Dick - correction - the next generation of wine industry software started 9 years ago when my company (Missing Link Networks, Inc., makers of eCellar) changed history: We launched the first web-based POS in the wine industry, only one year after eWinery started.
You see, I took a chance being in the Cloud (in 1998) way before the Cloud was Cool. I remember the good old days (not too long ago in fact) when we were competing against eWinery, and I heard Dick would poo-poo us saying that 'there was something Missing' in our platform (get the connection to our name? haha), or that if the Internet connection went down, the tasting rooms' POS would be down.
Well - eWinery's new direction says it all: They're abandoning their existing platform (with 200+ wine brands on it - yikes!) and starting over, with a future roadmap, subject to change of course, that looks very similar to ours. And, they're piggy-backing on someone else's platform to (hopefully) help accelerate the process.
Honestly - I'm not surprised by this move, but it is stunning to me personally. I cannot imagine starting over after doing this job for 15 years. All of the DTC touchpoints, not to mention all the integrations with compliance and accounting. Eek!
Luckily, I don't have to worry about starting over since we already have tomorrow's software operating today. Just ask some of our clients, like Pride Mountain Winery, Flora Springs, and Hunneeus Vintners (eg Quintessa, Flowers, etc.). They've been using our entire 100% web-based platform for years (integrated web, POS, club, inventory, reservations), and they will tell you - there is NOTHING like eCellar on the market today.
So Ron & Dick, I wish you guys the best of luck on your new path. My guess is your new core modules (web & club, maybe more) will be usable and somewhat bullet-proofed sometime in 2014, but who knows, I could be wrong.
One thing is for sure, many existing eWinery clients aren't waiting for your promises to come true anymore, as we have more inbound clients coming over from eWinery. It turns out that they actually want tomorrow's software today.

This first post on our blog is a significant step for me. For the past 14 years I have been proud about being 'under radar' in the wine industry, not focusing on how many clients we serve, but rather which clients we serve and how we serve them. From day one in October 1997, my vision has been simple: empower our winery clients to do more with less: Let them perform more effective contact management, faster selling and accurate shipping of wine, and do it all with less hassle and fewer systems to juggle.
We are now making our place in the wine industry, with the breadth and depth of our entire software platform - eCellar. Our new website which includes this first blog post is simply a sign that we are now visible and no longer 'under radar', because we are ready to offer the rest of the marketplace what our existing clients have known now for years: how truly easy yet powerful software can be.
eCellar was literally built to help our client harness the power of customer and order data to grow sales. In future posts I will discuss how leveraging the customer relationship is key to building direct sales. I invite you to subscribe to this feed and stay tuned.
